Review: Charlie Does Baler

Charlie Does started out as a cafe, a haven for surfers when they’re not on the waves. Today Charlie Does offers accommodation, custom surf boards, surf lessons and board rental as well as remaining true to its roots with a cafe and surf shop. I was lucky enough to spend 3 days with Charlie Does and it was the perfect start to my time in the Philippines. Read on for all the deets…

The Rooms

A quiet spot @ Charlie Does Baler

Charlie Does works with a low waste, eco accommodation concept and true to this concept the rooms are in fact upcycled shipping containers. With a bamboo, treehouse style exterior you would never know! Inside, tidy furnishings and very comfortable beds greet you. For me having an ensuite with hot shower was a great bonus, backpacker budgets don’t usually allow such luxuries.
Outside the rooms there are neat clothing racks to dry your swimmers and a seating area to chill.
All of the above for 800php per night (~£11).

The Food

Chilli Quorn Grounds @ Charlie Does Baler

Wow. The menu is what vegetarian/vegan dreams are made of. But don’t let that put you off if you’re not veggie… the food is delicious. We ate the Chilli Quorn Grounds Rice Bowl, Tofu Barbecue, Quorn Chunks and CD Chips (root vegetable crisps) and we drank the Local Greens Smoothie, Apple Juice, Fresh Coconut Juice and a Black Americano. All of the food exceeded my expectations but my personal favourite was the Chilli Quorn Grounds Rice Bowl, Ben’s favourite was the Barbecue Tofu. The chef consultant Marco really knows his flavours! Each dish has its own flare and my only wish would be to have more time to try the whole menu.

The Extras

Baler is the ultimate chill destination. But if you are looking for some activities to fill your time Charlie Does have you covered. Upstairs from the cafe there’s a gym/yoga studio – ask in the cafe about yoga classes too. Down at the beach (just a 2 minute walk away) Charlie Does offers surf board rentals and lessons. Once you’ve got that surf bug head back to the cafe to shop their surf store, they stock gorgeous swimsuits, all the surf accessories you could possibly need AND have a workshop to create custom boards.
Having chatted to the lovely guys at Charlie Does I know they’ve got even more plans for the coming summer! How about outdoor cinema? Barbecues? Campfires under a full moon? Dreamy right…

In short Charlie Does – paradise. I’ll certainly be back.
